  • GIF - GIF Image
  • JPG/JPEG - JPEG Image
  • MP3 - MP3 Format Sound

Q. What file types will future versions of Indexer handle?
A For the next version of Indexer, we are working on it handling Excel, and PowerPoint files. If there is sufficient demand, we will also add support for Adobe Photoshop and/or Microsoft Visio files. We welcome other suggestions from our registered users.

Q. Does Indexer use automatic file-indexing or manual file-indexing?
A Indexer is a manual file-indexing application. It does not automatically index any of your files. This avoids you having a myriad of application and system files - which probably don't interest you - cluttering up your index. You remain in complete control over which files Indexer indexes. The choice is always yours. This means you have to work a bit harder to get Indexer working for you; but in our opinion this will result in greater satisfaction. Once you've indexed selected files, Indexer will retrieve them for you.

Q. Why does Indexer only run on Windows XP and Windows Vista?
A Microsoft no longer provides mainstream support for the Windows 95, 98, Me and NT4 operating systems. Their mainstream support for Windows 2000 ended in June 2006. Although Windows 2000 is still used extensively in corporate environments, it is Windows XP that is the most popular OS for home users and small businesses. Windows Vista is expected to become as popular in due course.

DotRational Indexer was designed for home users and small businesses. We have therefore developed it for exclusive use on Windows XP. It works on Windows 2000, but we have not tested it fully on that OS and do not give support for users running that OS.

By limiting the diversity of Indexer's user-base in this way, our development of Indexer has been focused and specific. Our commitment to support Indexer properly was built-in from the start and we think this has made for a better software package. It also means that we are better able to assist XP and Vista users with issues if and when they arise.

Q. Why can't I access the GPS-specific tags that are embedded with the EXiF headers in the files that my GPS-enabled digital camera produces?
A To see GPS-specific tags you need to have Service Pack 1 (or 2) installed for Windows XP. Without one of these Service Packs, this type of tag will be inaccessible to Indexer.

Q. When I browse folders to add files to my Index, I don't always see all files in a folder. Why?
A When you add files to an Index, the folders you browse will only display the file types that Indexer currently supports (see above). Other, unsupported file types are not listed and therefore cannot be added to an Indexer index file.

Q. Some Acrobat PDF files don't display properly in Indexer. What's going on?
A TrueType fonts that are not present on your system and which are not embedded in the document are substituted to 'Arial'. The same happens with Type 1 fonts. Only JPEG and BMP image formats inside PDF documents are supported. It is our intention to fix these problems in upcoming releases of Indexer.

Q. I've added some SWF Flash animations to my index, but Indexer doesn't seem to play them. How can I fix this?
A Your system needs to have Adobe Flash Player installed. This is a small download available from www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer.
